You Are What You Write
Your write-up defines you. If it is made so badly it means you were not in the mood when you made it or it is done without proper planning and organisation. If it is well-founded it means you were inclined to put your ideas into words. It simply mirrors your emotional state when you decide to get your pen and paper and start to move your hand and write the first word, the second, the third, and the fourth and so on and so forth. Since it defines you, it describes you and it is you.
Everybody is capable of writing. In fact, it is a skill that we possess. It depends on how often we do it, the more we execute it the more we will be good at it. Since it is a skill it should be developed and by constantly doing it, you’re slowly developing your writing skill. But some people say it is not easy as one, two, three nor a, b, c. And yes I strongly agree! When you write you consider so many -- topic or subject, title, length, diction, jargon, readers, presentation (of which it should be catchy and well-organised) and these considerations could stuck you in the end. And when you write you also reckon its process. What should you do first, next… last? This process is called the writing process. On the contrary, don’t allow these stuffs to hinder you from writing. Remember, you can write!
There is no secret to writing so well but following this process could abet you to become a good writer.
First, Pre-writing, this is the planning phase of the writing process, in this stage you have to think and decide of a topic. Make sure your topic is not so broad because it might be very complicated to compose something about. Thinking of a topic could be a piece of cake for others but for some it could be one of the toughest things to decide. Somehow, if your teacher assigned you what to write you are left with no option but if you can choose a topic think of something that you know. Don’t risk writing about something that you have little schema. It will lead you to bad write-up. Then, jot down all ideas related to the topic. Whatever registers in your mind about the subject you write them. Don’t limit your thinking. Be divergent and widen your perspective about the topic. Next, organize your ideas through outlining. Arrange your ideas from general to specific. Ideas could also be sequenced in its prominence, importance, chronological order, etc. Second, Drafting, you are encoding your ideas in a paper following the proper organisation. Your aim in this stage is to convey information and present an idea for an argument. When you make a draft you don’t consider the neatness of your work. Third, Revising, you review, modify, and reorganize your work by rearranging, adding, or deleting content, and by making the tone, style, and content appropriate for the intended audience. The cardinal goal of revising is to improve your output. Bear in mind that your draft is not yet perfect that is why it is called a draft so you have to do intensive revisions to your work. Fourth, Editing, at this point in the writing process, writers proofread and correct errors in grammar and mechanics, and edit to improve style and clarity. You invite another writer to check your output. Remember, a feedback from him or her could help you create a near to perfection literary piece. Lastly, Publishing, the final writing is shared with the group. Sharing can be accomplished in a variety of ways. You can either publish it online or you can print it so you can let your target readers read your work.
You might be thinking that there are a lot of stages to follow in writing however, following the writing process could help you compose a good write-up. A good write-up is something worthy to read. A good write-up catches an ocean of audience too. And most especially a good write-up is designed by a good writer like you!
