Telephone Conversation 01
Situation: You want to screen calls in order to find out who is calling.
(Phone is ringing...)
A: Hello! ABC Corporation office, may I help you?
B: May I speak to Mr. Smith?
A: May I ask who is calling please?
B: This is Mr. Arno Schoe of RM Corporation.
A: Could you wait for a second sir because I'll transfer your call to Mr. Smith's office.
B: Not a problem!
When you want to screen calls all you need to say is the expression "May I ask who is calling please?". As the receiver of the call you ask the caller his name in a respectful manner by using the expression "May I ask who is calling please?" This expression is the most formal.
