"In the island" or "On the island"?

Which is correct? "He is in the island." or "He is on the island."

I think "on" is more natural than "in". A discussion concludes "on" is correct(see following URL). But, I've googled those phrases. Here is the result:

ON the island - about 1.68 billion pages
IN the island - about 1.71 billion pages

I guess both are correct. At the same time, each has different nuances. How do you think?

I and my co-English teachers in the university were talking about how prepositions are too tricky such as the difference between in and on like in the island or on the island and the likes. Actually, you can use either in or on. It depends on the meaning that you want to imply to your readers or listeners. Likewise, both sentence structures are correct as well but there is a little difference in the meaning.
